Hunger disease. Studies by the Jewish physicians in the Warsaw Ghetto.

چکیده
A meeting was held in Germany by top Gestapo officials, including Adolph Eichmann. This meeting was attended by some of the leading Nazi physicians. They had calculated that if the inhabitants of the ghetto received no more than 800 calories of low-protein food per day, the entire population would be dead in nine months—a simple solution for the destruction of the Jews in Nazi-occupied Poland. Thus hunger and starvation were universal throughout the ghetto.

An underground medical school in the Warsaw ghetto, 1941-2.
The Holocaust-the deliberate destruction of most of the Jews and Gypsies of Europe along with enormous numbers of the non-Jewish population of eastern Europe-is arguably the least understandable event since the Creation. Reactions to the Holocaust by those who were enmeshed in it are, however, more comprehensible. A very few committed suicide;2 some became totally involved in self-preservation ...

Jews played an important role in Polish society for over 600 years. From 1918 to 1939 they constituted over 10% of society and 20% of doctors were of Jewish origin. Jewish communities founded their own hospitals, among which The Old Order (Jewish) Hospital in Warsaw was the largest and the most important. The Old Order (Jewish) Hospital in Warsaw was founded in 1799 on the initiative of a Jewis...
متن کاملDr Aaron Pik, a Lithuanian physician, recounts this harrowing story in his diary from the period he spent in the Shavli ghetto during the Holocaust. He also notes the deep moral and ethical dilemma facing the physicians involved. According to the halakhah (Jewish Law), protecting the life of the mother takes precedence over the life of the baby, and it was believed that in such terrible circumstances religious commands should mandate the physicians’ reluctance to disregard medical ethics and the Hippocratic oath. But, between 1939 and 1945, medicine held out hopes of survival for Jewish women, men and children, and Jewish physicians in Nazi-occupied Europe were able to restore a sense of order in the life of their communities. Pik’s is a remarkable diary and a unique historical source, and one which Miriam Offer uses brilliantly in her chapter dealing with various aspects of Jewish medical practices in the Shavli ghetto. This chapter is one of the twenty included in a volume on Jewish medical resistance in the Holocaust, edited by the

In some instances it has become both biomedicalised and secularised, as I suspect it has in the UK, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. In contrast to the US and Canada where chiropractic is only taught in private institutions, in Aus...

متن کاملGhetto medicine: the special case of Ghetto Lodz, 1940-44.
The first Jewish ghetto in Poland, established soon after the German invasion in 1939, was perhaps the most hermetically sealed-off mass prison of World War II. As the living conditions deteriorated year after year, the depleted community was plagued by epidemics of infections and endemic diseases. The extermination process was completed with frequent “relocations to the East,” as the deportati...
